Eleocharis vivipara is the taller variant of the well recognized Dwarf Hairgrass. This plant is really like an aquatic grass, with thin stalks growing from roots that spread horizontally by sending our runners. Due to its tall height, this plant makes a stunning background plant when grown in large clusters. High lighting and Co2 injection is not always necessary to grow hair grass but it will definitely increase the growth speed and thickness of the foreground. Simply separate larger mats into small portions and plant each an inch or so apart half way into the substrate. After several weeks, the plant will send our runners all around and a lush foreground of grass can be created.
Eleocharis vivipara (Long-hair grass) has a special place among its related species, primarily because of its method of propagation. It does not propagate by runners like Eleocharis parvula or Eleocharis acicularis. Instead, propagation is done by formation of plantlets on the surface of the leaves, in a way similar to propagation of the ferns. New plantlets don’t produce roots for a long time, thus giving the impression that the stem of Eleocharis vivipara is divided into several leaves. This feature is of particular value for aquascaping. But later, when roots are already developed and visible, the plant will no longer look nice. Therefore, Eleocharis vivipara requires a special care.
Care for Eleocharis vivipara has its features in terms of trimming and planting. The planting is difficult because the bush of Eleocharis vivipara is often made of dense cluster of its plantlets. You can press this cluster to the substrate, but in this case many of the bushes will remain unrooted. In the future, roots of these unrooted bushes will grow above the substrate becoming more and more visible. It’s better, therefore, to separate all the young bushes and plant them in the substrate so that all roots are buried in the substrate.
Micranthemum sp ‘Monte Carlo’ – A highly interesting and recommendable ground-covering plant that’s still a rarity. It was collected on a riverbank in the province Misiones in North Argentine by some Japanese, and it was named after the place where it was found: Micranthemum sp. “Montecarlo-3”. Micranthemum sp ‘Monte Carlo’ is also known under the name “New Large Pearl Grass”, and in South America as “Bacopita”. It looks like a larger version of Hemianthus callitrichoides, but it is also somewhat similar to “standard” Micranthemum umbrosum. It grows flat on the ground, forming a compact mat. The roundish leaves are a bit smaller and of a darker green than those of M. umbrosum. When planted in an elevated place, loose shoots will bow to the ground. This Micranthemum is easier in cultivation than Hemianthus callitrichoides.

Rotala rotundifolia ‘Ceylon’ was originally introduced from Sri Lanka (Ceylon). R. sp. ‘Pink’ since about 2012 This pretty Rotala rotundifolia form was often used by Takashi Amano for his aquascapes. Since about 2012 it is also called Rotala sp. ‘Pink’, however this name is also used for a different Rotala rotundifolia variant.In its submerged form, ‘Ceylon’ differs from “normal” Rotala rotundifolia by a looser, lighter growth habit. The stems are thinner, darker coloured and tend to grow upward in wide spirals. The internodes are relatively long, the leaves are light green with pink lower side. Under lots of light, the shoot tips can assume light-reddish hues.
The Ceylon Rotala is as easy to care for as “standard” Rotala rotundifolia. It is recommendable as a bush in the midground to background.

Eleocharis parvula (Dwarf-hair grass) is naturally found in brackish and saltwater environments across North America, Europe, much of Asia, and some parts of South America. Because of its widespread distribution, this dwarf plant does not live in highly specific habitats. However, it is commonly found growing like a carpet in areas that resemble marsh or mudflat conditions.

Hemianthus callitrichoides “HC” is one of the world’s smallest aquarium plants. It was originally imported by Holger Windelov, who found it in a riverbed on Cuba, to the west of Havana. Its delicate stems with the tiny roundish to ovoid leaves have a creeping growth habit. When planted in small tufts at a distance of a few centimetres, the plant will soon spread and form an uninterrupted carpet. Hemianthus callitrichoides “HC” is an attractive foreground plant for small as well as large tanks.
Because of the small scale of this aquarium plant (standing at just 3-5cm tall and 10cm across) the HC Cuba makes for the perfect plant in nano aquariums, or within any type of layout where you need to achieve an idea of scale. It can create some particularly effective designs when used in an aquarium that is to house small fish and/or shrimp and produces a steady pearling as it photosynthesizes.

Hydrocotyle tripartita – Referred to in the hobby as Hydroctyle sp Japan, its true name is Hydrocotyle tripartita and it originates from South East Asia. The leaves are small and presents a brilliant green colour in your aquarium. It’s best to plant as a carpeting plant as it hugs the foreground and sends out runners on a daily basis. If the light is dim, you may find it stretches up the tank. Good light is needed for the plant to form a lovely carpet along the substrate. Once you’ve taken hydrocotyle tripartita from the pot, you’ll be able to split the plant into several portions and plant into the substrate with tweezers.
Hydrocotyle tripartita was made famous from frequent usage by famous aquascapers such as Takashi Amano. It is characterized by its clover-like leaves which can grow into compact bushes of green. This plant is versatile and can be used in the foreground, midground or background. It is undemanding and grows fast, often out-competing and overgrowing the tank if left untrimmed. By frequently trimming new growth and using high light with CO2, the plant can stay low growing and create a carpeting effect over the foreground.
Propagate by trimming stems and replanting on pulling apart dense clumps and splitting the roots. New shoots can be trimmed anywhere along the stem which allows the plant to grow thicker and more compact.

Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ – This red version of Cryptocoryne undulata grows wild in rivers of Sri Lanka. It is an easy plant, tolerant of very different conditions in an aquarium. Appearance of the plant will partially depend on these conditions. Low levels of light and nutrients will produce a relatively tall, greenish-brown plant of slow growth. Higher levels of light and nutrition, combined with added CO2, will make the plant grow considerably faster producing shorter leaves of a reddish-brown colour.
The Undulate Crypt still grows under low light and without fertiliser, however, it does better under medium lighting and a nutrient-rich substrate. As well as many other Cryptocoryne species, this plant easily propagates by underground runners.
Cryptocoryne undulata is a versatile aquarium plant, best placed in the midground, in higher tanks also in the foreground. It forms extended stands with time, and with its narrow, dark foliage, it is especially suitable for aquascapes in the nature aquarium style.

Hygrophila polysperma from tropical Asia is one of the hardiest aquarium plants available. The shoots becomes 25-40 cm tall and 4-8 cm wide. It is particularly good for beginners because it grows in almost all conditions. It is also recommendable for initial planting of tanks because it quickly removes excess nutrients from the water and competes with algae.
The East Indian Hygrophila normally grows so fast that it is important to prevent it crowding out other plants, so the shoots must be cut regularly. As well as other stem plants, it is easily propagated by cuttings. Even detached leaves floating on the surface form small new plants.
Hygrophila polysperma is a very variable species with different leaf shape and colour, depending to some extent on the light supplied. “Standard” H. polysperma develops under water oval to lanceolate, light green to somewhat brownish leaves.

Limnophila aromatica – This beautiful, big stem plant from tropical Asia has elongate leaves with purple underside and rather green upper side. It develops wider stems than the similar Limnophila hippuridoides. It’s best colorated under intensive light. It also thrives in hard water, but CO2 addition is recommendable as it promotes growth significantly.
Limnophila aromatica can be found growing in swampy or boggy soil in its native region of southeastern Asia. Light is the most important aspect of successful culture with L. aromatica, though its nutrient and carbon needs should not be underestimated. With its amazing coloration, L. aromatica is most effective in the aquascape as a focal point. It shows up particularly well against a dark background or against species with small, bright, light green leaves. This species is extremely effective and appealing, especially if it is well maintained.

Are root tabs safe for fish, shrimp, and snails?
Yes, our brand of root tabs is safe for all animals. The reason is because we use actual soil in our root tabs that is nontoxic if the nutrients get released into the water column. Some people try to save money by making their own DIY root tabs or using fertilizers meant for houseplants and vegetables, but those terrestrial products can cause dangerous ammonia spikes in the water that may kill your fish and invertebrates.
Because root tabs are water soluble, the key is to insert them into the substrate as quickly and deeply as possible. It’s okay if Easy Root Tabs accidentally pop out or get unearthed by your fish because they won’t harm the water quality, but ultimately, we want the root feeders to have access to more nutrients in the ground. Therefore, use planting tweezers or your fingers to push the whole root tab to the bottom of the substrate. (Do not remove the fertilizer from the capsule or else it will dissolve in the water column.)
In contrast to other pennyworts like Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Hydrocotyle verticillata keeps its creeping growth habit in the aquarium. With its uncommon shield-like leaves it is a true eye-catcher when used as ground-covering plant or group planting in the fore- or middle ground. For ideal growth, good lighting and not overly hard water are recommendable. It can be kept emerged, too. Then it can even be cultivated as houseplant, or – during the warm season – as potted plant in the garden.
In the warmer regions of the Americas, Hydrocotyle verticillata is quite a common plant. It prefers very moist soils and also grows in shallow water. It differs from the more wide-spread H. leucocephala by the form of its leaves that are formed like a tiny parasol and have no slot.
Cultivating H. verticillata in an aquarium is not really difficult. One of the most important factors is light, as its height depends on light intensity. The more intense, the smaller the plant will stay. Apart from that, its demands regarding nutrients and CO2 supply are quite easy to meet. A balanced supply of nutrients and CO2 injection are beneficial to the plant’s growth, though. However, if abundant nutrients are added, unfortunately the dwarfism so many hobbyists covet in this plant will disappear and it will grow much larger leaves.
Hygrophila corymbosa ‘stricta’ – This decorative, undemanding Hygrophila is labeled by aquarium plant nurseries as Hygrophila corymbosa ‘stricta’, mistakenly also “Hygrophila guanensis” or “H. guyanensis”. It resembles Hygrophila corymbosa “Siamensis” but differs by more red brown coloration, especially under intense lighting.
Hygrophila corymbosa “Stricta” manages with medium lighting and hard water, however a good nutrient supply is beneficial. Especially potassium deficiency leads to perforated older leaves in Hygrophilas. This stem plant is easily propagated by cuttings.
With its upright, strong stems and large leaves, this Hygrophila looks best as a group in the midground to background of larger tanks. It is also suited for “plant streets” in Dutch style aquariums. It can also be used as a half-emersed plant in open tanks where its nice purple flowers can be expected.

Echinodorus ‘Ozelot Red’ – Red Flame’ is an especially decorative Echinodorus cultivar, selected by the famous breeder Hans Barth sen. (Dessau, Germany) in the 1990s. Echinodorus ‘Ozelot Red’ reaches a moderate height of about 30 cm and develops a dense rosette of many leaves. Its underwater leaves have an about 10 cm long stalk and a 20 cm long, 10 cm wide blade. Especially the younger leaves show a contrasting pattern of densely set dark-red blotches on bright brown-red to light green ground. Also on older leaves, the spot pattern is still visible. The blotch pattern is stronger and denser than in the similar Echinodorus ‘Ozelot’.
As most sword plants, this cultivar is mostly delivered by the nurseries in its terrestrial (emersed) form, with rather inconspicuous green leaves. Once planted in the aquarium, submerged leaves will appear, showing the full splendour of this plant.
As well as virtually all Echinodorus, Echinodorus ‘Ozelot Red’ grows best with abundant macro- and micronutrient supply via the substrate. Strong lighting with high red component enhances the intense coloration of the submerged foliage. The water parameters are of subordinate importance, however CO2 supply promotes the growth. Occasionally inflorescences may appear, developing adventitious plantlets.
With its bright coloration and striking pattern, Echinodorus ‘Red Flame’ is a realy eyecatcher in the aquarium. It provides a strong accent in the midground. With its relatively small size it is also suitable for the background of smaller, to about 30 cm high tanks.

Echinodorus ‘Ozelot Green’ – This well-growing swordplant cultivar has leaves with red-brown spots, as well as Echinodorus ‘Ozelot’, but differs by light to middle green basic colour, causing an especially contrasting pattern. Otherwise it is similar to the normal ‘Ozelot’: the submerged leaves are narrowly elliptic with wavy edge; the leaf rosette gets about 40-50 cm tall and 40 cm broad.
The Green Ozelot swordplant looks best as a solitary plant or small, loose group in the midground to background of bigger, at least 50 cm high aquariums. Dark green spots are a beautiful contrast on lighter green leaves. Leaf margin is fluted. Nutrient rich substrate promotes growth, fertilization beneficial. Echinodorus Ozelot Green is easy to grow and care for as it thrives in almost all tank conditions. Vigorous growth when nutritional requirements are met. Capable of submersed or emersed growth. Propagation by rhizome division of larger plants or adventitious shoots. When exposed to an extended photoperiod, 12+ hours, Ozelot swords send up adventitious shoots that will extend above water surface. If kept submerged, these shoots will produce more daughter plants. Can propagate plantlets after 5-8cm of growth, remove carefully. A Good beginners plant.

Rotala sp. ‘Colorata’ is very probably a variant of the variable species Rotala rotundifolia. Often it is also labeled with the erroneous name “Rotala indica”. In comparison with “standard” R. rotundifolia, this Rotala assumes an especially intensive light red to orange red colour, especially if it is under good light. The leaves are narrow lineal. The stems have an overhanging to horizontal growth habit and form dense bushes as they ramify readily, just like Rotala sp. “Green”, which is always light green. Plant Overview

This Hygrophila was named after the Brazilian river Araguaia in trade, however, later on it was identified as the Asian species Hygrophila lancea. Under water it grows lineal reddish-brown leaves with a lighter-coloured central vein. Its stems have a creeping growth habit, ramify well and form low bushes. It needs a good CO2 supply. Trimming the leaves maintains the bushy form. Hygrophila lancea “Araguaia” needs intensive lighting, and in contrast to most other Hygrophila species it is a rather slow grower. Usually it is sold in its emerged form and differs very much from the underwater form, which develops after it has been placed in the aquarium.

Eriocaulon sp. “Vietnam” is not yet known for a long time in Europe, however it has already proved to be an easy aquarium plant – in contrast to a number of other Eriocaulon rarities in the aquarium hobby. This plant, not yet determined to species, was originally found in the Vietnamese province Thanh Hoa. It is a medium-sized, about 15-30 cm tall Eriocaulon with relatively broad, medium-green, arching leaves, resembling Eriocaulon sp. “Goias”.
This grass-like plant still grows with medium lighting and is even said to be suitable for hard water. However, a nutrient-rich substrate and a not too low CO2 concentration in the water column (at least 20 mg/l) are surely very conducive for its growth. With time, this plant forms a dense “grass tussock” with a number of leaf rosettes and can be divided into several single plants for propagation.
Eriocaulon sp. “Vietnam” can be used in aquascaping similarly to Blyxa japonica – e.g. as a meadow-like stand in the midground, linking the background with low groundcovers in the foreground, or as scattered tufts between hardscape elements. In contrast to similar rosette plants such as Sagittaria subulata or Helanthium bolivianum, it does not develop runners, making its handling easy. This undemanding Eriocaulon surely deserves a wide distribution in the aquarium hobby.
