Microcarpaea minima is a small, tender wetland plant from Southeast Asia, Japan and northern Australia that is able to grow above and under water. It occurs in and by shallow, warm, periodic waters such as puddles and rice fields, also on riverbanks. It is the only species of the genus Microcarpaea and belongs to the same family as Glossostigma (Phrymaceae). It was first introduced as aquarium plant from West Kalimantan by Wim Tomey (Netherlands) and is still a rarity in the aquarium hobby. In the tissue culture line of ADA it is labeled as Microcarpaea minima Merrill; the last part is the author citation of the species name.In its terrestrial form this plantlet forms low cushions with 3-5 cm long, narrow leaves and small, pale purple flowers on thin stems. The submerged stems grow rather upright, much branched and a little chaotic in all directions, with up to 20 mm long and 1-2 mm wide leaves.
This plant is not too difficult to grow but benefits much from rather strong lighting, soft to medium hard water and CO2 addition. It is considered as thermophilic, so the temperature should be well above 20 °C. The planting of the tender stems may be a little fiddly and is best done with tweezers. The growing, spreading bushes can be kept low by trimming.
Microcarpaea minima may be still little known to aquascapers. It looks decorative as a low, light green bush or small carpet in the foreground or midground and fits well into small tanks. With its narrow, almost needle-like leaves it contrasts from many other foreground plants. Its cushion-like terrestrial form may also be interesting for emersed setups where one may expect its tiny flowers and fruit capsules.

Limnophila sp. “Vietnam” has only been known in Europe since around 2010 in the aquarium hobby, and it is still hard to come buy. This delicate plant is a great discovery for aquascaping. Given that it is under intensive light it develops creeping well-ramifying 3 to 4 cm wide shoots, which makes it a great ground cover. Dense populations grow higher after some time, comparable to the much slower-growing Staurogyne repens. With L. sp. “Vietnam” you can create dense bushes that can be kept in form by regular trimming. This plant is especially well-suited for “mountain” layouts, e.g. creeping down a hill or as light green accent between rocks and driftwood. Its decorative appearance is enhanced by its very narrow, pointed leaves growing in whorls and the star-like shoot tips. Under strong light, the central veins of the leaves and the stems can assume a reddish hue.

Rotala rotundifolia is a time-tested popular stem plant wonderfully suitable for aquascaping. Its emerged form has roundish leaves, in the aquarium they grow to a longer, narrow form. Compared with other Rotala species it is relatively undemanding. This highly variable species is widely distributed in the Asian subtropics and tropics; standard variants available in trade are light green to reddish under water, depending on the light intensity.

The Indian Pogostemon Erectus forms compact groups of bright green, conifer-like stems, 10-20 cm tall and 1-3 cm wide. Pogostemon Erectus is suitable as a background plant and creates a wonderful focal point in both smaller and larger groups. Intense light helps the plant to stay compact for a longer period. Moderate growth and vigorous roots.

Rotala Macrandra is an aquarium plant that is very popular in the aquarium trade for its beautiful coloration and it has widely been used in aquarium decoration. He plant is native to India known to thrive in marshy areas. This is one aquarium plant that can be tempting for even the novice aquarist due to its coloration but can be very demanding. The plant is known to require intensive care for it to thrive. It requires soft water, a substrate that is nutrient rich, intense lighting, and CO₂ injection. When placing Rotala Macrandra in the aquarium it is best to have it planted in the middle center of the aquarium.

In contrast to other pennyworts like Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Hydrocotyle verticillata keeps its creeping growth habit in the aquarium. With its uncommon shield-like leaves it is a true eye-catcher when used as ground-covering plant or group planting in the fore- or middle ground. For ideal growth, good lighting and not overly hard water are recommendable. It can be kept emerged, too. Then it can even be cultivated as houseplant, or – during the warm season – as potted plant in the garden.

This form of Cryptocoryne spiralis from India is still hardly known in Europe. In its submerged form it develops dark brown-red, strap-like leaves with ruffled edges, somewhat resembling those of Cryptocoryne crispatula var. balansae. Until now little information is available about this Cryptocoryne; apparently it reaches a moderate size and is recommendable for the midground, in smaller aquariums also for the foreground.
As well as other narrow-leaved Cryptocorynes, this plant should get at least medium lighting, and a nutrient-rich substrate is recommendable.
Glossostigma elatinoides is a very popular plant for Japanese-style tanks. It is one of the smallest aquarium plants, which makes it ideal for the foreground. A difficult-to-care-for plant that needs a lot of light. If the lighting is too weak, it tends to grow upwards. Must not be shaded off by larger plants. When planting, make small tufts (approx. 1/8 of the pot) and plant at a distance of only a few centimetres. Thus you will get a ground-covering group in less time. The injection of CO2 and soft water enhance growth considerably.
Hemianthus callitrichoides ‘Cuba’ HC is one of the smallest aquarium plants in the world, and creeps over the bottom with millimetre-sized, round leaves. Hemianthus callitrichoides is an attractive and popular foreground plant for small aquariums. It is not a difficult plant, but it requires good conditions such as enough light, added CO2, water circulation and fertilizer to thrive. If these conditions are hard to create, you may use Micranthemum ‘Monte-Carlo’ as an alternative, as it is less demanding.Small pearls or bubbles of oxygen are often produced on top of the plants, adding a very lively aspect to the carpet. If planted in small clumps a few centimetres apart, it will spread rapidly and cover the bottom like a carpet. Trim the carpet regularly, otherwise the lower parts will not get enough light causing root death.Found on Cuba, west of Havana.
Utricularia graminifolia is a grass-like bladderwort species from the Asian tropics that grows into a lush bright light green lawn. It is thus quite popular in aquascaping, too. It is not always easy to cultivate, but under favorable conditions (lots of light, soft water, CO2, macro- and micronutrient fertilization) it is a fast grower.

AQUAEL has expanded its range of products to include three novelty aquarium pumps: UNI PUMP 700, UNI PUMP 1000, UNI PUMP 1500. Their main features are: excellent energy efficiency, high performance, small size, and modern design.UNI PUMP 700, UNI PUMP 1000, UNI PUMP 1500 can serve to pump water or to actuate canister filters and other aquarium devices (e.g. sterilisers, coolers, skimmers, sumps etc.). Thanks to their water-tight design, they can be operated either fully submerged in the water or out of the water (as straightway pumps). The pumps are suitable for use in fresh water and salt water alike. Their main advantages are: a small size (they will fit into any fish tank, sump, or aquarium stand), low power consumption (12 and 19 W correspondingly), quiet operation and ease of installation. In addition, they have an interesting design that will combine perfectly with other devices used in modern aquariums.UNI PUMP 700 is powered by 12V low-voltage current (safe power) via an adaptor mounted on the connector that facilitates the installation of the device e.g. inside aquarium stands. Being a low-voltage device, the pump can also be recommended for purposes other than fish-keeping, since it can be used wherever people are required to come into direct contact with water while the device is in operation (e.g., laboratories, restaurants, etc.).
