Phosphate has several negative effects if present in a too high concentration. First of all undesirable algae growth might result. Making an aquarium an unpleasant sight.
Phosphate also blocks or retards the growth of corals and calcareous algae.
One of the scientific studies shows that a phosphate concentration higher than 0.05 mg/L decreases the growth of calcareous algae by 90%!
Washing fish food, which is a rich source for phosphates in a sieve after thawing reduces the input of phosphate tremendously. Also avoiding use of phosphate-rich low-grade activated carbon helps keep phosphate levels as low as possible. Checking the activated carbon for phosphate prior to use is therefore highly recommended.

The pH value can have a major impact on the growth of corals and calcareous algae and on many biological processes. The pH should not be allowed to fluctuate more than approx. 0.3 units during 24 hours and should preferably be kept between 8.0 and 8.2.
If the pH is too low then the cause may be a too low alkalinity and/or insufficient aeration.
A low pH can be corrected by improving aeration and by increasing the alkalinity to NSW (Natural seawater) value or upto approx 25% above NSW levels.
The Salifert pH test kit is sufficiently accurate to monitor pH fluctuations of approx 0.2 pH units. Our KH + pH Buffer allows fast and efficient correction of alkalinity.
Approx. 50 tests per kit. Range pH 7.4 - 8.6.

Say Goodbye to Manually Testing for Calcium, Alkalinity, or Magnesium in your Reef!
The Trident is an automated testing system that regularly tests alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium in your saltwater aquarium — and then communicates this information to your Apex so you can get alerts, and change your dosing. When combined with the DOS (available separately) it creates a fully automated system for the proper dosing of supplements, maintaining them at consistent levels.
Automatically performs Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium tests
Includes 1-month of reagent
Combine with Neptune DoS for automated dosing
Programmable alerts for out of range parameters
Data is graphed for easy to comprehend tank stats
Can be set-up and integrated with your Apex in less than 15 minutes
Empties used reagents and sample into an external vessel (not included)
Up to one month of testing before reagents need changing; based on 4-Alk, 2-Ca, 2-Mg tests per day
Note: Requires Neptune Apex or ApexEL with an open 1Link OR a 24V Power and Aquabus cable
How It Works
The Trident is a self-contained automatic titration colorimeter. That’s quite a mouthful, for sure, so let’s state it as simply as we can. The Trident is basically automating what you (and top scientists) do already when you test your water, that is, perform a color changing titration and interpret the results.
On a scheduled basis the Trident carefully mixes its reagents with a small amount of sample water from your aquarium. While doing this, it is measuring (titrating with a precision peristaltic pump) the amounts of each that are necessary to reach an expected color change (determined by the electronic colorimeter). When it finishes the titration, it sends this sample/reagent fluid to your waste container. It then interprets the results of that test and logs the value into your Apex.
Easy Plug & Play Setup
From the box to testing in under 15 minutes! Unlike other testing systems, there are no reagents to mix, tubes to cut, or pumps or probes to calibrate. Simply plug in one cable, two tubes, and run the setup task on the Apex Fusion mobile app — it holds your hand through the installation with helpful videos along the way.
Consistency & Precision
The Trident tests with a precision of +/- 0.05 dKh for Alkalinity and 15ppm for Calcium and Magnesium. This is better than humans can do consistently with every hobby-grade test kit on the market.
Understand Your Reef Tank Like Never Before
When you start getting the regular data coming in from the Trident you will be amazed at the things you can see happening. The daily light cycle swing on calcium carbonate uptake. A salinity drop by watching magnesium. An out of sync dosing of calcium. This increased understanding ultimately helps you maintain a better, more successful reef.
Instant Alerts
You can set up your Apex to alert you, or take immediate action(s) when a parameter falls outside of the safe zone you specify. As just one example, you might be dosing an Alkalinity solution and a misconfiguration could lead to overdosing of your tank. The Trident will catch that, alert you, and give you more time to make that correction before its too late and to save your aquarium. The data from the Trident can also be used to turn on and off other devices (like dosers or solenoids) to protect your tank even more.
Ultimate Stability with the Neptune DŌS
The more stable you maintain proper levels of Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium, the better your corals will grow and thrive. But coral uptake of these supplements often changes and requires us not only to perform more testing but also seems to put us in a never-ending state of adjusting our dosing levels.
The Trident, when paired up with one or more of our DŌS systems solves this problem with Automatic Dosing Control (ADC)
When configured on the Apex, ADC will take the results it receives from the Trident and uses them to gradually turn up or down the amount of additive your DŌS delivers. But, don’t worry, we have built this feature with safety in mind. With ADC you set your target value and your starting dosing amount and ADC will only tune that dosing level +/-35%. If it takes more than that amount of dosing to keep your aquarium at your target value, then the Apex will stop ADC, revert to your starting dosing amount, and alert you that you need to manually adjust your dosing level. Then, ADC can be re-enabled and it will continue to guide your DŌS so that it keeps you as close to your target value as possible.
It is possible to use ADC for all three tests – Alkalinity, Calcium, and Magnesium. You can also use one test value to adjust up or down more than one additive delivered by the DŌS (i.e. Triton system).
Simple Reagent Changes
When using the default testing schedule of four (4) alkalinity, two (2) calcium, and two (2) magnesium tests a day, the reagent stored inside the Apex will last a full month. And adding new reagent is super simple — just slide out the drawer, remove the old bottle(s), and replace them with new ones. If you desire, you can also run a calibration session with the included calibration standard.
The cost of reagents and the recurring cost is a valid concern for a hobbyist considering the test kit or automated system – and we designed the Trident with that in mind – keeping those costs as low as possible. Reagent comes in 2-month kits (based on the default testing schedule of 4-Alk/2-Ca/2-Mg per day). These kits include two bottles of Reagent A (changed every month), one each of Reagent B and C (changed every two months), and one bottle of our calibration seawater sample. The reagent kit has at least 240 alkalinity tests and 120 tests each of Calcium and Magnesium. These two-month kits are priced at just $44.95 in the U.S.
Ultra-Quiet Testing
You will hear the Trident operate from time to time if you listen closely or you have a super-quiet room. And, as compared to other automated testing systems, it is several dB quieter. While inside your cabinet along with your other equipment, you will likely never even hear it.

Magnesium is the third most abundant ion in seawater, surpassed only by sodium and chloride. Its abundance is critical in the formation of weak ion pairs with carbonate ions. This allows calcium and carbonate ions to be available for uptake by corals and invertebrates. Low levels of magnesium lead to low or unstable levels of calcium and alkalinity. Signs of low magnesium levels include precipitation of calcium as insoluble calcium carbonate and impaired inhabitant growth and health.

The HI758U Checker® HC (Handheld Colorimeter) provides a simple, accurate and cost-effective way to measure calcium. Required for the development of calcium carbonate skeletons of coral reefs, calcium is a crucial component of marine waters. Designed as a more accurate alternative to chemical test kits, the HI758U provides quick, accurate results in a few easy steps.
Features at-a-glance:
Easier to use and more accurate than chemical test kits
Dedicated to a single parameter
Small size, big convenience
Ideal for: Aquaculture, Water Quality, Environmental, Education
The HI758U Marine Calcium Checker HC® uses a 100 to 1 dilution for analysis and thus requires deionized or distilled water absent of calcium to function correctly. Calcium can be found in many freshwater sources and this any amount present in the water used at the C1 phase can cause false high readings. In addition, many hobby grade reverse osmosis deionized water systems may not adequately remove calcium. This can vary based on the types of filters used, their effectiveness and frequency of replacement. We recommend using deionized water with low conductivity or pure vapor distilled water commonly found in most pharmacies.
Never use tap water to clean your cuvettes. This is especially important for the HI758U Marine Calcium Checker as calcium is commonly present in tap water and residual amounts present in the cuvette will elevate results produced by the Checker. Our HI98703-50 Cuvette Cleaning Solution ensures the glass cuvette used for colorimetric measurements remains clean and free from imperfections.
Calcium Checker Troubleshooting Tips
Never rinse your cuvettes with tap water or saltwater
Use pure vapor distilled water from your local pharmacy at C1 phase. RODI water from home filtration units may not be suitable for this test as calcium can easily permeate through your filter membranes.
Clean your cuvettes with distilled or deionized water absent of Calcium that is going to be used for C1 phase dilution.
Measure out 9 ml of distilled or deionized water for C1 phase
Make sure no excess aquarium sample saltwater is on the tip of the pipette. Only administer the saltwater that is sucked into the pipette tip.

Set reminders, log testing and dosing information, and keep tabs on your aquarium from anywhere in the world. All this and more is possible with the Neptune Apex Controller System!
The Apex's included WiFi allows you to connect to the free Fusion Cloud interface, where you can do everything from calibrating probes to customizing outlets with just a few taps. Fusion also gives you the ability to monitor and control your Apex from anywhere and on nearly every device platform – computer, tablet, or smart phone – Windows, OSX, iOS, or Android.
The Fusion interface has a user-friendly design sure to create a headache-free command center for all your aquarium automation needs. Its drag and drop interface allows you to toggle control switches, graphs, video tiles and more to your dashboard, allowing for easy customization that is focused on your individual monitoring needs. Being that the Fusion is a web-based application, you will never have to endure the rigmarole of endless app updates, clumsy touch screens, or complicated drivers to install. Whenever you open the interface, you are always running the most current version of the software. Set up and configuration is streamlined with an easy-to-follow guided user interface.
Included with the Apex Pro and standard Apex Controller Systems is the Energy Bar 832-- the power control hub to rule them all. They are the only UL-certified power bars approved for use in aquarium applications. Each of the eight individual outlets has independent power consumption monitoring with its own LED indicator status display, and the power supply feeds an additional three built-in 1LINK ports as well as two 24VDC accessory ports. Now you can connect additional Neptune accessories like the DOS and WAV pump directly to the Energy Bar 832, saving room and eliminating messy cords around your aquarium.
A3 Apex Pro Base Unit
The A3 Apex Pro is the most complete and comprehensive aquarium monitoring system in the Neptune ecosphere. If you're serious about having complete control over your tank, then look no further. From key parameters like temperature and ORP to water level depth and individual equipment power monitoring, the Apex Pro does it all, and now with a new soft-touch finish and built-in audible alarm. The Apex Pro includes four FMM ports for connecting all fluid monitoring sensors-- no separate module purchase necessary!
Energy Bar 832
The most comprehensive aquarium controlling and monitoring system to date is finally here. The Energy Bar 832 now has eight individual, 7 amp relayed outlets letting you use any outlet for any device. Each individual outlet can also monitor and detect power usage in amps or watts, letting you set alarms and send emails when pumps have clogged or failed, lights are not turning on, heaters leaking current, letting you be notified of the issue before it becomes a problem. With electricity costing more and more money per Kilowatt hour having the ability to monitor each pump, heater, and light lets you now make better decisions on the overall value of your equipment.
Each Energy Bar 832 also has two 24VDC accessory ports that can power small pumps, solenoids, fans and more, while the built-in 100W DC power supply lets you control up to 3 1Link accessories like the WAV circulation pumps, and DOS fluid metering system without the need for any additional power supplies or consuming additional outlets. The EB832 also has 3 AquaHub connections letting you expand to any existing or upcoming module making your Apex System truly limitless.
Neptune didn't stop there, with an all new mounting system on the Energy Bar orients the power strip in the correct direction keeping cords neat and tidy. While the outlets have a bit wider spacing, and orientated opposite of each other keeping room for those bulky transformers, allowing you to plug in almost anything you want, where you want.
*NEW* LLS Liquid Level Sensor
The Neptune LLS is a first of its kind industry exclusive! While most liquid level sensors simply measure the presence or absence of liquid at a predetermined sensor height, the LLS is one continuous vertical sensor that can identify the exact depth of a liquid in both inches and centimeters at any given time. This increased sensitivity in measurement can help you identify and be alerted of changes in evaporation, consumption, and dosing levels within sumps, ATO reservoirs, AIO tanks, dosing containers, mixing stations, and more. The Apex can then be set to send alerts or to take action whenever the liquid level changes by a specified amount. All measurements are shown in both digital and animated visual readouts in the app, allowing you to track your liquid level over time. The opportunities and potential uses for this new sensor technology are endless for automating and optimizing your aquarium system.
*NEW* LD-3 Optical Multi-Surface Leak Sensor
Neptune's LD-3 Multi-Surface Optical Leak Sensor marks a significant improvement over its analog counterpart, the LD-2 Solid Surface Leak Detection Probe While the LD-2 utilizes conductive strips to detect fluid leaks on surfaces around your aquarium, the LD-3 takes advantage of optical sensor technology instead. This shift in sensor technology gives the LD-3 two distinct advantages over the LD-2:
Reusable and resistant to corrosion. The LD-3 sensor can be reused after contact with water. Unlike the conductive strips of the LD-2 which are prone to corrosion from contact with saltwater, the LD-3's epoxy-coated optical sensors can continue to provide long-lasting leak detection after repeated contact with saltwater & with no risk of corrosion!
Multi-surface applications with no false alarms. The conductive strips used on the LD-2 can sometimes give a false alarm when placed on metallic surfaces. With its optical sensor, the LD-3 can effectively be used on any surface material type, including metal and epoxied cement, without the risk of triggering false alarms.
Lab Grade, Double Junction Probes
The Apex Pro system includes high-quality probes for monitoring your tank's temperature, pH, and ORP. Calibration is a quick and simple process via the app dashboard, which will automatically recognize when your readings have stabilized and letting you know when to move to the next step-- no more guesswork and reading RAW data. In addition, the double junction pH and ORP probes will allow your readings to stay more stable without the need to calibrate as often.
Backwards Compatible
If you have any old modules, head units, energy bars, or other Apex accessories they will work flawlessly with the new Apex Controller.
