Nitrogen is one of the main three macro nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium: NPK) required by plants and can often become the limiting factor to growth in a flourishing system. Flourish Nitrogen™ is a concentrated (15,000 mg/L) blend of nitrogen sources. It provides nitrogen in both the nitrate form and the plant–preferred ammonium form. However, no free ammonia is released because the ammonium in Flourish Nitrogen™ is complexed and unavailable until utilized by the plants. Ammonium becomes available after conversion of urea (carbamide). Flourish Nitrogen™ also provides nitrate for those plants that can readily utilize nitrate as well. Research suggests a tightly closed nitrogen cycle on reefs where concentrations are higher in micro-zones near the corals (Radecker 2015, Wiedenmann, 2023) than in the surrounding water.

Supplementing with inorganic nitrogen provides a targeted means of increasing nitrogen without also adding phosphate or dissolved organics. Catappa leaves coming from Indian Almond Trees (Terminalia catappa) help to replicate natural environments for Bettas, shrimp and other aquarium inhabitants. When added to an aquarium, they release tannins and other organic compounds which aid in maintaining lower pH and gently tinting water. These conditions mimic habitats with acidic water and abundant leaf litter. As catappa leaves decay, beneficial micro-organisms grow on the leaf surface, creating a natural source of food for shrimp, snails, and newly-hatched fish.
Add 1-2 leaves per 20 liters (5 US gallons). Remove and replace every month or as desired. Catappa leaves may float initially but will sink after 2 - 3 days. To make an extract, boil three grams (approx. two-and-a-half leaves) in 1 liter (1 US quart) of water for ten minutes or until desired color is attained. Let extract cool to aquarium temperature and pour directly into the tank or mix with prepared water for water changes. When first using extract, add gradually over a 2 to 3 days and monitor to ensure pH stays within suitable range for tank inhabitants. Chemical filtration media such as activated carbon can remove compounds provided by Catappa leaves.

Reef Trace supplies a broad range of trace elements demonstrated to be necessary for proper reef health and growth. Trace elements are normally depleted by utilization, oxidation and precipitation. Reef Plus is formulated to provide nutrients available from natural tropical reef waters. Contains vitamin B12, vitamin C, thiamine, inositol, choline, iodide, and other essential constituents. Reef Plus is nitrate/phosphate free.
Other manufacturers vitamin supplements are incomplete, containing only vitamins and trace minerals. Pearl Beach™ is an all natural aragonite substrate for all types of marine, reef and tropical aquaria. Its chemical composition will assist in stabilizing calcium and alkalinity while preventing large pH declines. Unlike competing “wet†gravels, Pearl Beach™ is sold dry: this bag contains 35% more gravel than a bag of wet gravel of equal weight. These “wet†gravels are marketed to give one the impression that they contain living, microscopic animals when in fact they only contain common bacteria. Cichlid Lake Saltâ„¢ is a chemically sound blend of salts designed to replicate the natural environment of Rift Lake African Cichlids. It contains all physiologically essential elements such as magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, and includes trace components such as iron, aluminum, and iodide.
Although the major Rift Lakes contain basically the same mineral salts, they do so in greatly differing concentrations. Cichlid Lake Salt™ is formulated so that dosages vary depending on the lake of origin and need only be added when setting up an aquarium or with water changes. Many competing products are little more than combinations of Epsom salt and bicarbonate of soda. This will not provide a complete replication of the mineral salts that are contained in the lakes of Africa, in particular calcium and potassium. CupriSorb is a powerful adsorbent of copper and heavy metals. CupriSorb will remove copper more rapidly and efficiently than carbon and is thus ideal for emergency copper removal. It extracts all types of copper, including chelated copper, and remains effective until it turns a deep blue-black color. It may be regenerated repeatedly. If placed in continuous use, it will gradually extract even precipitated copper from the gravel/substrate bed as well. CupriSorb will allow maintenance of invertebrates in copper-treated tanks by removing copper leaching from substrates.
CupriSorb is a powerful copper specific chelating resin. Competing products are not chelating products, but merely cation exchange resins. Such resins can remove copper from freshwater but are ineffective in saltwater.
