Phosphate has several negative effects if present in a too high concentration. First of all undesirable algae growth might result. Making an aquarium an unpleasant sight.
Phosphate also blocks or retards the growth of corals and calcareous algae.
One of the scientific studies shows that a phosphate concentration higher than 0.05 mg/L decreases the growth of calcareous algae by 90%!
Washing fish food, which is a rich source for phosphates in a sieve after thawing reduces the input of phosphate tremendously. Also avoiding use of phosphate-rich low-grade activated carbon helps keep phosphate levels as low as possible. Checking the activated carbon for phosphate prior to use is therefore highly recommended.

Feeding:Feed no more than your pet will consume within about a minute, two (2) to three (3) times each day. Hikari Seaweed Extreme absorbs water rapidly and takes on a soft texture similar to wet Nori Algae, making it difficult to remove any uneaten food. Red Sea KH Coralline Gro is a complex of carbonate buffers, potassium and trace elements such as iron formulated in the ratio taken up regularly by the coralline algae.Coralline Gro should be used instead of regular buffer supplements (such as Red Sea’s Reef Foundation B) during the cycling of all new marine aquariums and on an ongoing basis in fish-only or soft corals systems.[Note: When using Coralline Gro, only use other supplements containing the elements Potassium or Iron (such as Red Sea’s Coral Colors B & C supplements) according to a measured uptake of each element. Coralline Gro should not be used in conjunction with Red Sea’s Reef Foundation ABC+]DosageEnsure that the alkalinity is at optimal values and run the aquarium for 4 days at a stable salinity (compensate for evaporation daily) without adding any supplements. At the endof the 4 days test the alkalinity and calculate the “4 day dosage” to replenish back to theoptimal levels. Add the “4 day dosage” to the system. Divide this “4 day dosage” by 4 and use as the daily dosage for the next week.After a week of adding the daily dosage, test the alkalinity and calculate the adjusting dosage of each supplement to replenish back to the optimal levels.
If the adjusting dosage is significantly different from the previous daily dosage amend (increase/decrease) the daily dosage as appropriate.
If the measured level is above the optimal level wait for the excess to be depleted before restarting the daily supplementation with the amended daily dosage.
Continue testing alkalinity every week and make adjustments to the daily dosages asrequired. If you miss one or more days of supplementing add the complete amount that you have missed but do not exceed the maximum recommended daily increase.

PhosGuard rapidly removes phosphate and silicate from marine and freshwater aquaria. Although PhosGuard is effective in both fresh and marine water, it will operate better in sea water and the need for it is better defined in sea water. It is not recommended for phosphate buffered freshwater (PhosGuard would remove the buffer until saturated). PhosGuard is highly porous and bead-shaped to promote easy water flow through and around it, thereby increasing both its efficiency and capacity.

Meridian is an all natural oolitic (spherical or egg shaped) aragonite substrate for all reef and marine aquaria. Meridian is the premium aragonite substrate for the reef aquaria. It's grain size (a fairly uniform 0.25 - 0.50 mm) is ideally suited to reef inhabitants and it's chemical composition will assist in stabilizing calcium and alkalinity while preventing large pH declines. Unlike competing "wet" products marketed under the guise of being "live", Meridian is sold dry, thus you pay only for gravel and not for unneeded water. These products imply that they contain living, microscopic animals when in fact they only contain common bacteria. Dry or wet, there are bacteria on every substrate available. If one is concerned with shortening the aquarium cycle time for a new system, then the use of a product designed for that particular purpose would be more appropriate (such as Seachem’s Stability®).

KanaPlex is a blended kanamycin based medication that safely and effectively treats several fungal, and bacterial fish diseases (dropsy, popeye, fin/tail rot, septicemia). Because it is absorbed by fish it is useful in treating internal infections in those situations where food is refused. It does not adversely affect the filter bed and is easily removed with carbon. When used in a medicated food mix, it is excellent for treating bacterial infections in tanks that contain invertebrates. For use in freshwater or marine aquaria.

Growing algae in a refugium setting can help manage and combat reef tank nutrient issues, like phosphates and nitrates. One of the biggest keys to a successful refugium is having the proper light.
