Eriocaulon sp. “Vietnam” is not yet known for a long time in Europe, however it has already proved to be an easy aquarium plant – in contrast to a number of other Eriocaulon rarities in the aquarium hobby. This plant, not yet determined to species, was originally found in the Vietnamese province Thanh Hoa. It is a medium-sized, about 15-30 cm tall Eriocaulon with relatively broad, medium-green, arching leaves, resembling Eriocaulon sp. “Goias”.
This grass-like plant still grows with medium lighting and is even said to be suitable for hard water. However, a nutrient-rich substrate and a not too low CO2 concentration in the water column (at least 20 mg/l) are surely very conducive for its growth. With time, this plant forms a dense “grass tussock” with a number of leaf rosettes and can be divided into several single plants for propagation.
Eriocaulon sp. “Vietnam” can be used in aquascaping similarly to Blyxa japonica – e.g. as a meadow-like stand in the midground, linking the background with low groundcovers in the foreground, or as scattered tufts between hardscape elements. In contrast to similar rosette plants such as Sagittaria subulata or Helanthium bolivianum, it does not develop runners, making its handling easy. This undemanding Eriocaulon surely deserves a wide distribution in the aquarium hobby.

This miniature version of the well known Alternanthera is characterized by compact growth and a slower growth rate. It is particularly suitable for small aquariums or as a foreground plant in larger aquascapes. By careful trimming can you create a dense, red-violet carpet approximately 5 to 10 cm high. High light intensity and addition of CO2 improves the plants growth and overall appearance.

Rotala sp. “H’Ra” or “Gia Lai” is a new plant from Vietnam. It is probably a local variant of the species Rotala rotundifolia. The plant has been named after its location H’Ra in the province of Gia Lai in central Vietnam. Rotala sp. “H’Ra” or “Gia Lai” has narrow leaves and develops a nice light orange to red colour under good lighting. It has the same elegant growth habit as the light green Rotala sp. “Green”: overhanging to horizontal ramified stems. When combined with Rotala sp. “Green”, Rotala sp. “H’Ra” will be especially effective. Rotala sp. “H’Ra” or “Gia Lai” differs from the similar Rotala sp. “Colorata” by lighter-coloured narrower leaves and more overhanging stems when cultivated under the same conditions.
Notes:
Rotala has fragile leaves! Be sure to handle with care.
Final coloration is ultimately dependent upon the conditions this plant is kept in. This is a live plant meaning size, shape and color may vary.
Do not make drastic changes to the aquarium. Unstable parameters will result in melt and rotting of the aquarium plant.
Please be sure to remove this plant from its wrap. Remove the foam surrounding the roots and plant into a quality substrate.

Heteranthera zosterifolia “star grass” from South America is an especially beautiful aquarium plant. It ramifies well, which results in dense bushy plant groups after only a short time. Under strong lights Heteranthera zosterifolia “star grass” grows fast and needs frequent trimming to ensure that the lower leaves are still reached by the light. It often throws water roots on the stems. On shoots floating on the water surface, small blue flowers will grow above the waterline.
In the hobby, H. zosterifolia has been established for many years as a decorative plant for Dutch style aquaria as well as nature aquaria. Here it is used as contrasting plant in the fore-, the middle- and the background by simply cutting it to the desired height.
Known as star grass by vernacular name, this plant is a great water quality indicator. A lack of nitrogen (in the form of NO3) lets the leaves become transparent before they wilt. A lack of phosphorous (in the form of PO4) changes the plant’s bright green into a darker hue.
H. zosterifolia is a relatively undemanding plant and grows well at medium light intensities without additional CO2 fertlisation.

Ludwigia sp. ‘Rubin’ – As one of the reddest of the red plants, Ludwigia sp. ‘Rubin’ is quite an eye catcher. Even a few stems make a big impact as either a neatly maintained mid ground stand or as a group of stems protruding from behind a differently colored plant in the background. It makes a great contrast to either light or dark green plants. The Ludwigia sp. ‘Rubin’ variety is very easy to grow and has no particular demands. It grows quickly and equally well in a wide variety of conditions. Unfortunately, maintaining its deep red coloration is somewhat more of a challenge. Strong lighting with a good supply of iron go a long way towards that goal.

Ludwigia arcuata is one of the most delicatelooking Ludwigia species. It is widely spread in aquaristics and originates in the southeast of the USA, where it grows creeping or submersed along rivers and on the edges of ponds. It is also found in boggy areas.L arcuata is as easy as propagating any stem plant, and as this species tends to have lots of lateral shoots they just have to be cut off and re-planted. You can also take cuttings of the top shoot. Due to its delicate structure, Ludwigia arcuata ought to be planted in groups of at least 6 stems.
It needs more light to develop a red stem and red leaves, and it does best in slightly acidic soft to medium-hard water. Most decorative when planted in groups. Due to its small size Ludwigia arcuata is suitable for smaller tanks. In its emerged form it can be used as creeping terrarium plant, and if it has sufficient light it will sprout relatively large yellow flowers.

For many years, Ammannia gracilis is known in the aquarium hobby as one of the most colourful stem plants. It is native to West Africa (Senegambia) where it occurs as swamp plant in full sun, at sandy riverbanks and in floodplains. The plant is able to grow above and under water. In its terrestrial form its leaves are inconspicuously green. However under water it develops its up to 12 cm long submerged leaves. The upper side of the leaves is brown-red, the lower side deeply violet. Ammannia gracilis looks very similar to A. crassicaulis that is rather yellowish green to reddish.
The Red Ammannia is one of the more demanding aquarium plants. It should get much light; complete macro- and micronutrient supply, also via the bottom, is important. Rather soft water is beneficial, but with CO2 addition the plant also thrives in medium hard water. It prefers higher temperatures above 24 °C and still tolerates 32 °C. Several stems of different length should be planted into the ground with some space to each other. As well as other stem plants, this Ammannia is propagated by cuttings of the stem tip and side shoots.
With its broad shoots and splendid brown-red coloration, the Red Ammannia looks best as a group in the midground of larger aquariums. It is well suited for creating “plant streets” in Dutch style tanks. Ammannia gracilis may also be interesting for open tanks because it readily grows out of the water. Strong lighting provided, one may expect its little light purple flowers.
Ammannia Gracilis is a moderately demanding plant which will not show its full potential unless its requirements are met. Lighting should be moderate. Ammannia Gracilis prefers mildly acidic, moderately soft water although it is quite adaptable to more extreme water conditions. If there is not enough iron in the water column, the foliage of this plant will become pale. This large, colorful stem plant, when under good growing conditions, grows rapidly upwards toward the water’s surface. Pruning should be done by topping and replanting the more robust top portions. Propagation should be done by removing side shoots from the main stem plant with a pair of scissors.

Anubias Barteri Round AKA Anubias Golden Coin is a less common type of Anubias that's fast becoming popular in the hobby. This is an extremely easy plant to grow and can survive a wide range of water parameters. It has long stems like Anubias Barteri but the leaves are more round and circular. This plant is suitable as a midground and background of your aquascape.
Like other Anubias plants it can grow in both aquariums and terrariums either submerged or emersed. The plant can be attached directly onto driftwood, rocks or any aquarium decoration using thread or glue. Make sure to keep the rhizomes above your substrate or the plant can begin to rot. Propagation is easy and straightforward; simply cut or pull apart rhizomes to be replanted.

A new and very special Anubias nana variety is the color variant 'Jade'. The variety name refers to the most important gemstone in China - the jade. The Pinto´Anubias is a quirk of nature that has been propagated from a normal green population using selection. The light green variegation can be more or less pronounced, so only the most beautiful plants are propagated further in the production plant. This variety is very slow-growing and requires more light than the original green form. Due to its small size, the ‘Pinto‘ makes an attractive addition to Nano Cubes and can be used as „eye-catcher“ in aquascaping. A currently rather rare plant is Bucephalandra sp. 'Red Scorpio'. The name refers to the red coloration of the rhizome. With good lighting and adequate nutrients, the coloration is more distinct. Other characteristics include beautiful wavy leaf edges and dark olive green leaf coloration. The top of the leaf is also covered with tiny silvery dots, which further enhances the appearance. Like all Bucephalandra species, 'Red Scorpio' grows ideally on wood and stones. For aquascaping this beauty from Borneo is highly recommended, especially with delicate root compositions.

Anubias Barteri is a very variable plant with many different variaties. The glabra variety is sometimes incorrectly referred to as Anubias lanceolata. The narrow elliptical and smooth-edged leaves are typical of this vigorous aquarium plant. Growing submersed in the aquarium it remains significantly smaller compared to the emersed form. Additional water movement, such as near a filter putlet, promotes the growth significantly. The culture and also care are very simple and therefore it is very suitable for beginners. Until recently, this very vigorous plant was known under the name ‘Wavy Leaf‘. Their botanical assignment to the species ‚pygmaea‘ was made through extensive investigation of this interesting genus. Its variety name refers to its place of origin in the Sintang region. Bucephalandra are rheophytes - that means they grow on rocks near streams and cascades. Therefore, they should be attached ideally to root wood or stones in the aquarium. Its elongated, dark green leaves have a beautifully wavy edge. Bucephalandra pygmaea ´Bukit Kelam´ is recommended particularly for Nano Cubes and Scaper’s Tanks.

This Congolese water fern grows in habitats like those where Anubias are found. Its powerful rhizome covers stones and roots like a carpet along the banks of rivers and streams. Submersed fronds are dark green, transparent, and incredibly ornamental. Avoid strong light for this plant since it prefers shade. It also prefers fairly strong water movement, e.g., near a filter. A good CO2 supply will ensure lush growth. We highly recommend binding these plants to wood and roots.

Java Fern is the most popular type of fern with aquatics hobbyists, and is widespread in tropical Asia. This species varies widely and displays a number of different leaf shapes and sizes. A completely undemanding specimen and a perfect plant for beginners, it grows best when the rhizomes are anchored to rocks or driftwood. Low to moderate light is completely sufficient, although it also grows well under strong lighting. Older leaves can sometimes produce plantlets that can easily be cut away and reattached at another point using a piece of thin fishing line.

Spiderwood, or red bog root, has now become a real classic in aquatics. The many-branched and filigree root pieces originate from rhododendron plants from Asia. In contrast to mangrove wood, they do not stain the water - but are originally very light. However, our roots are pre-watered and usually sink quickly. The filigree leaf structure of the variety 'Trident' looks very harmonious in combination with the finely branched Spiderwood roots. Microsorum pteropus 'Trident' grows rather slowly and, like the main form, is very easy to care for and undemanding.

A very striking and unusual plant is Aponogeton madagascariensis. As its name suggests, it comes from the island of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. The grid-like appearance of the leaves is unique and a real eye-catcher. However, the species is quite demanding in care, even for the plant connoisseur. A stronger water movement and cooler water are an advantage. Regular resting periods with low temperatures and less lighting must be observed in order to enjoy this beauty permanently.

Red Tiger Lotus is broadly distributed across tropical Africa, where it inhabits various bodies of water, including temporary pools and lakes, and flowing water. It has a bulb for storing nutrients and robust floating leaves. Its most attractive feature is the submersed juvenile leaves that do not reach the surface. Of the two colorways, this red variant is the more popular among aquarists; the green version is hard to find commercially. Tiger Lotus is generally undemanding. Older, larger leaves should always be removed at the base of the bulb.

A new Alternanthera variant, also labeled as Alternanthera reineckii Rosanervig. This colourful, well-growing plant is characterised by its vivid pink leaves with lighter-coloured leaf veins. Under water, it has a relatively compact growth habit, comparable with Alternanthera reineckii ‘Mini’, and it is great as colourful accent in the middle ground or in the foreground, given that it is trimmed regularly. Like most Alternanthera variants, Alternanthera reineckii Rosanervig prefers good light and an abundant nutrient supply as well as additional CO2 injection for good growth and intensive colours.
