Why does Deltec Fluidize the Media? With Deltec Fluidized Calcium Reactors, fluidizing the smaller grains of media ensures that the whole of the surface of the media is always available for reaction with the low pH water within the chamber. On a standard non fluidizing calcium reactor the water always finds the easiest route through the media and forms channels or tracks which can result in only a small area of the media being utilised.Deposits of fine media build up within a standard reactor which choke up the pathways further and require regular maintenance and cleaning out to maintain a reasonable level of efficiency. With Deltec calcium reactors the fine grains of media are kept in suspension and pushed out of the reactor with the water which means that the media never needs to be emptied out and cleaned but simply topped up. The Deltec PF509 Calcium Reactor is the starting model of a new fifth generation of Deltec Fluidised Calcium Reactors which now comes with a full bayonet fitting on the top for full and easy access to the media. Seachem DeNitrate
DeNitrate is an economical, natural, porous material with a pore distribution and geometry that promotes both aerobic nitrification within the first few millimeters of depth and anaerobic denitrification at the core. The material has a high surface area and supports a high density of bacteria. Although DeNitrate has capacity to trap nitrate, this, as with other nitrate retaining materials, such as certain zeolites and synthetic resins, is quite limited and the primary mechanism of nitrate removal is anaerobic. “Liveâ€rocks or reef rocks remove nitrate by anaerobic denitrification. DeNitrate removes nitrate by the same process. Efficiency is magnified several folds by forcing the water to filter through the porous DeNitrate. As with reef rock, anaerobic conditions are achieved by the porosity and the depletion of oxygen by the aerobic process at the surface. Excessive flow rates should, therefore, be avoided, as they may impede development of an adequate anaerobic environment to support denitrifying bacteria. DeNitrate is also an excellent media for aerobic nitrification and it makes an ideal biological filter in drip trays, canister filters, sumps, or even box filters. At high flow rates (greater than 100 US gallons per hour), it will function solely as an aerobic filter. At slow flow rates (less than 50 US gallons per hour), it will function as both an aerobic filter and an anaerobic denitrifying filter.

Multimineral nutrient soil for freshwater aquaria Building on its extensive knowledge of the natural habitats of the most popular aquatic plants, Dennerle has developed a humus-rich long-term mineral nutrient soil especially for aquariums. The plant is optimally supplied with all the nutrients it needs via the strong, widely branched rootstock. This allows the care of even sensitive species that are rather difficult to keep in the aquarium. Of course, Deponit-Mix does not contain any additional phosphates and nitrates – nutrients that can promote algae in excessive concentrations – and it is covered by the aquarium gravel as the bottom layer. Many years of practical experience show: Deponit-Mix effectively prevents algae plagues. The combination of depot nutrients, trace elements and clay minerals, which regulate the nutrient balance, always gives the aquatic plant roots the right amount of nutrients. Humic-rich natural peat slightly acidifies the soil and makes plant nutrients more available. Clay minerals, humus substances and soil bacteria are already active in the slightly moistened deponite mix. The bacteria are supplied with oxygen through the two holes in the lid.
