One of the most powerful ways to improve tank performance is also the simplest: Regular water change in a mindful way.
It is practiced in the largest world-class aquariums, and should be done even in a the smallest desktop tank. While a tank looks naturalistic, it is not naturally self-sustaining. Organic waste (much of which cannot be measured by hobbyist test kits) accumulates and not everything can be digested by the tank’s bio-filter.
Embrace the power: Change Water the 2Hr Way today.
The #1 algae trigger is decomposing organic matter. Remove all decaying leaves. Stem plants require replanting after pruning a few times. Unlike terrestrial hardwoods, older aquatic stems generally deteriorate over time. Remove and discard old stems and roots.
Instead of simply draining water, use a pipette or turkey baster to gently stir up detritus on the surface of plants and substrate. Take care not to stir up deeper levels of the substrate. Vacuum the detritus away while draining away around 40% of the tank’s water.
Add a comprehensive 360 water conditioner directly into the tank and refill, taking care not to stir up the deeper levels of substrate. If you are keeping sensitive livestock, pre-mix the water conditioner in a separate container before adding the conditioned water into the aquarium.
tap water today
Industrial water chlorination dates back to the 1890s in Germany and the UK.
Today most urban tap water contains between 0.2ppm and 2ppm of Chlorine and Chloramines ( a more stable form of Chlorine).
This is high enough to kill water-borne diseases, but low enough for human consumption. However this level is sufficient to harm fish and destroy the beneficial bacteria in an aquarium.
regular water change
It is worth the effort to change ~40% of the tank water regularly.
At least monthly for a slow growing, fully planted tank with a light fish load. More frequently for tanks with higher bio loads.
Regular water change helps keep algae at bay by removing organic waste that is not digested by microbial action (and not measurable by hobbyist test kits).
When performed the 2Hr Way, it significantly reduces the prime algae triggers of detritus and decaying matter. It also helps to remove algae spores.

DOOA WABI-KUSA Mist is a liquid fertilizer for aquatic plants that are above the water surface for example in a terrarium / paludarium. DOOA WABI-KUSA Mist contains important nutrients, has a repellent effect on pests and enhances the colour of the leaves of the Wabi-Kusa plants. For a Wabi-Kusa area of 10 x 10 cm apply 5 pumps evenly over the leaves. Do not use the spray for submerged plants.
What is Wabi-Kusa?
A wabi kusa is basically a small portion of plant substrate (usually soil), often formed into balls, with different aquatic plants growing on and from it. The plants are in their emersed form. This has been made popular by Takashi Amano and his company ADA, Aqua Design Amano.

Epic Root Tabs are extremely powerful. 1 tab treats a 10 x 10 square inch surface area and lasts for 2 – 3 months. We have tested this product in numerous tanks and it is not harmful to living organisms such as fish and aquatic plants when used correctly. All of our Epic Aquatics plants have Epic Root tabs in them to make sure they have the right nutrients in them when being delivered to you.
Are root tabs safe for fish, shrimp, and snails?
Yes, our brand of root tabs is safe for all animals. The reason is because we use actual soil in our root tabs that is nontoxic if the nutrients get released into the water column. Some people try to save money by making their own DIY root tabs or using fertilizers meant for houseplants and vegetables, but those terrestrial products can cause dangerous ammonia spikes in the water that may kill your fish and invertebrates.
Because root tabs are water soluble, the key is to insert them into the substrate as quickly and deeply as possible. It’s okay if Easy Root Tabs accidentally pop out or get unearthed by your fish because they won’t harm the water quality, but ultimately, we want the root feeders to have access to more nutrients in the ground. Therefore, use planting tweezers or your fingers to push the whole root tab to the bottom of the substrate. (Do not remove the fertilizer from the capsule or else it will dissolve in the water column.)

Flourish Advanceâ„¢ is an all-natural, biologic growth enhancer for aquatic plants. Its advanced formula contains phytohormones, minerals, and nutrients that dramatically stimulate the growth of both roots and shoots in aquatic plants. Phytohormones are a group of naturally occurring compounds that play crucial roles in regulating plant growth in a wide range of developmental processes, including cell division, formation and activity of shoot meristems, induction of photosynthesis gene expression, leaf senescence, nutrient mobilization, seed germination, root growth and stress response. Used regularly, it also enhances mineral absorption and improves disease resistance. It is non-toxic and completely safe for all plant varieties as well as for fish and aquatic organisms.
During the first ten to fourteen days after application, Flourish Advanceâ„¢ works to stimulate root growth beneath the surface. After this initial induction period, significantly enhanced growth in the leaves and stems of the plants will occur.

Flourish Excelâ„¢ is a source of bioavailable organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO2, but, may also be derived from simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). The use of either CO2 injection or Flourish Excelâ„¢ does not necessarily negate the use of the other. Because the processes of producing photosynthetic intermediates and building onto them occur simultaneously, one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excelâ„¢ either alone or in conjunction with CO2 . The combination is particularly ideal for situations when continuing to add CO2 could result in dangerously low pH levels. Flourish Excelâ„¢ also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3).
The reason plants need CO2 is to produce longer chain carbon compounds also known as photosynthetic intermediates. Photosynthetic intermediates includes compounds such as ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate, and 2-carboxy-3-keto-D-arabinitol 1,5 bisphosphate. Although the names are complicated, the structures are quite simple (5 carbon chains). Flourish Excelâ„¢ does not contain these specific compounds per se, but one that is quite similar. By dosing with Flourish Excelâ„¢ you bypass the involvement of CO2 and introduce the already finished, structurally similar compounds. It is in its structural similarity that Flourish Excelâ„¢ is able to be utilized in the carbon chain building process of photosynthesis. Simple chemical or enzymatic steps can easily convert it to any one to any one of the above named compounds (or a variety of others).

Iron is immobile in plants. This means that plants cannot divert iron from older leaves to new ones. Therefore, deficiency symptoms appear first on new or young leaves. Because plants use iron to produce chlorophyll, a lack of iron results in chlorosis, or yellowing, of the younger leaves. Stems may also appear short and slender. If the deficiency is severe and prolonged, each new leaf emerges lighter in color than the preceding leaf.
When choosing an iron supplement, it is important to know the distinction between the two forms of iron. The iron will be in one of two oxidation states: ferrous having a +2 charge, or ferric having a +3 charge. Ferrous iron, the preferred iron form and is soluble in water at any pH. Ferric iron, however, is only soluble below a pH of around 5.5; but if the pH is higher than 5.5, which more than likely it will be in a planted aquarium, the ferric iron will become insoluble and precipitate, settling in the root zone. Once this occurs, foliar absorbtion becomes impossible.
To overcome this precipitation, competing products employ a chelate of ferric iron: iron-EDTA. While this does keep it soluble, it has a couple of drawbacks with respect to foliar uptake of iron. (1) Iron-EDTA bonding is very strong, thus very little of the iron will be available to the plants over a given time frame and (2) Physiological energy must be expended by the plant in order to extract the ferric iron from EDTA-iron and then convert (reduce) it to the ferrous form. Our approach is different in that we use a complex (not chelate) of ferrous iron in Flourish Ironâ„¢.
Flourish Ironâ„¢ is a highly concentrated (10,000 mg/L) ferrous iron gluconate supplement. Plants are able to much more easily derive a beneï¬t from Flourish Ironâ„¢ because ferrous iron gluconate is already in the ferrous form so they do not expend energy reducing it. Despite what other manufacturers may intimate, gluconate is not harmful to plants or fish. In fact, ferrous gluconate is better suited to foliar feeding than is iron-EDTA owing to the relatively weaker iron-gluconate bonding vs. iron-EDTA bonding. In addition, ferrous gluconate has the added bonus of being a source of carbon.

Nitrogen is one of the main three macro nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium: NPK) required by plants and can often become the limiting factor to growth in a flourishing system. Flourish Nitrogen™ is a concentrated (15,000 mg/L) blend of nitrogen sources. It provides nitrogen in both the nitrate form and the plant–preferred ammonium form. However, no free ammonia is released because the ammonium in Flourish Nitrogen™ is complexed and unavailable until utilized by the plants. Ammonium becomes available after conversion of urea (carbamide). Flourish Nitrogen™ also provides nitrate for those plants that can readily utilize nitrate as well. For maximum benefit, use with Flourish Phosphorus™ and Flourish Potassium™. Flourish Nitrogen™ is safe for invertebrates such as shrimp.

Phosphorus is one of the main three macro nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium: NPK) required by plants and can often become the limiting factor to growth in a flourishing system. Flourish Phosphorusâ„¢ is a safe solution (4,500 mg/L phosphate) of potassium phosphate that takes the guess work out of phosphate dosing. Unlike competing products that mix nitrate and phosphate in a fixed ratio, Flourish Phosphorusâ„¢ (being nitrate free) allows you to dose phosphorus according to the needs of your plants without the risk of overdosing nitrates. When used as directed, Flourish Phosphorusâ„¢will enhance and accelerate the growth of aquatic plants without enhancing algae growth. For maximum benefit, use with Flourish Nitrogenâ„¢ and Flourish Potassiumâ„¢. Flourish Phosphorusâ„¢ is safe for invertebrates such as shrimp.

Flourish Potassiumâ„¢ contains 50,000 mg/L of potassium suitable for the natural planted aquarium. Potassium is one of several elements that are vitally important to maintaining a vigorous level of growth in a planted aquarium. Potassium can become depleted in a rapidly growing system or when the source water has a low mineral content. In these cases potassium could become the limiting factor to growth. Use Flourish Potassiumâ„¢ to prevent potassium depletion (signs of which include yellowing in older leaves) and maintain the highest level of growth.
The most easily obtained sources of potassium are potassium nitrate and potassium phosphate. Both of these sources add to either nitrogen or phosphorus as well as potassium, making it virtually impossible to target a specific NPK ratio. Flourish Potassiumâ„¢ is derived from potassium sulfate, allowing the user to adjust potassium levels without affecting nitrogen or phosphorus.

Flourish Traceâ„¢ supplies a broad range of trace elements demonstrated to be necessary for proper plant health and growth (see below for signs of deficiencies). Trace elements are normally depleted by utilization, oxidation and precipitation. The latter two processes occur more rapidly than with other micronutrients. This makes it important to restore trace elements on a regular basis. Flourish Traceâ„¢ is safe for invertebrates such as shrimp.
We normally recommend one start with Flourish® and/or Flourish Tabs™. These provide a broad range of micro-nutrients (vitamins, amino acids) and micro and trace elements (iron, manganese, nickel, cobalt, etc) that will enhance plant health and growth. If the growth rate is substantial the trace elements are often utilized more rapidly than the other components in Flourish®, thus in this case it would be beneficial to also employ Flourish Trace™ along with Flourish® and/or Flourish Tabs™.
Just one squirt (approximately 1ml) of Scape Dechlorination will remove all chlorine and chloramines from 50L of tap water. If you add tap water directly to the aquarium before treating the water, you should add 1 squirt per 50L of your entire aquarium volume.
Scape N was developed to supply Nitrogen, to aquarium plants, in the correct quantities.
By adding one pump (approximately 1ml) of Scape N per 50L of aquarium water on a daily basis, you will be supplying enough Nitrogen for your aquarium plants.
Plant growth will increase over time, and as your plant mass increases, you may increase your dosage of Scape N to keep up with your plants increasing demands.
As with any aquarium, maintaining the balance is critical in keeping your aquarium plants healthy. It is for this reason that we recommend that a 35-50% water change be carried out once a week. This is not to remove fertilizer from the aquarium. It is to remove the waste produced by fish, as well as plants. Plants and fish secrete hormones and waste into aquarium water, and by doing a 50% water change, one can simply halve the amount of waste products within the aquarium, thus keeping the system in balance.
Not only does this maintain the balance, it reintroduces minerals that your aquarium plants require, such as calcium.
NITROGEN DEFICIENCY:
If a deficiency should occur, your plant will lose some of the older leaves, as it absorbs the nutrient content in the leaves from the tip of the leaf to the stem of the plant and sheds the old leaf. You may also notice that the new plant leaves are small, white and look wilted. This is a clear sign of a Nitrogen deficiency in your aquatic plant growth.
To counter this problem, one should immediately carry out a 50% water change, ensuring that you remove the dead leaf matter from the bottom of the aquarium. Once the aquarium is filled again, you can begin dosing Scape N as per the instructions on the bottle.
Scape P was developed to supply Phosphorus to the aquarium plants in the correct quantity.
By adding one pump (approximately 1ml) of Scape P per 50L of aquarium water on a daily basis, you will be supplying enough Phosphorus for your aquarium plants.
Plant growth will increase over time, and as your plant mass increases, you may increase your dosage of Scape P to keep up with your plants increasing demands.
Never dose more Phosphorus than Nitrates, as this will create an imbalance within the aquarium and could result in favorable growing conditions for pest algae such as Cyanobacteria.
PHOSPHORUS DEFICIENCY:
If a deficiency should occur, your plants older leaves will have dead patches on them, as the plant tries to reabsorb the nutrient in the leaf. The older leaves will also yellow and you may find that they fall off rather easily. They will also be prime candidates for having Green Spot Algae growing on them. It is similar to a Nitrogen deficiency, but without the stunted, pale new growth.
To counter this problem, one should immediately carry out a 50% water change, ensuring that you remove the dead leaf matter from the bottom of the aquarium. Once the aquarium is filled again, you can begin dosing Scape P as per the instructions on the bottle.
Scape Bac-Up has been developed to introduce healthy bacterial colonies into your aquarium environment. With over 30 different strains of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria, at a concentration far superior to anything else currently on the market, this product is designed to increase the bacterial colonies in the aquarium in order to drastically reduce the amount of waste in the aquarium.
Scape Bac-Up will assist with removing Nitrites, Nitrates, Ammonia as well as reducing Phosphate levels within the aquarium. It will help to remove sludge and improve water clarity, inoculate biofilters and improve the overall condition of the aquarium, thus reducing the frequency of water changes.
Always remember that water changes are a necessity for a healthy, vibrant aquarium, and a minimum of 25-30% of the aquarium water should be changed weekly.
Scape Complete has been developed to be an all in one system for your aquarium plants. Scape Complete contains all the essential minerals and nutrients required by your aquarium plants throughout all their stages of growth.
Scape Complete contains all of the elements in our separate Scape N, Scape P as well as Scape K and Trace products. It was developed to make life simple. Simplicity is one of the key enjoyment factors of aquarium keeping, and this one bottle solution certainly makes life so much easier.
Scape K and Trace was developed to supply Potassium and Trace Elements to the aquarium plants in the correct quantity.
By adding one pump (approximately 1ml) of Scape K and Trace per 50L of aquarium water on a daily basis, you will be supplying enough Potassium and Trace Elements for your aquarium plants.
Potassium is one of the most used Elements in a planted aquarium, and thus it is vital to add it to the aquarium. By combining Potassium and Trace Elements into one easy to use bottle, Scape K and Trace will save you time as well as money.
POTASSIUM DEFICIENCY
Pinholes will form in the leaf. These holes will gradually become bigger, and a yellowing area on the leaf will surround them.
TRACE ELEMENT DEFICIENCY:
Twisted, Pale growth (Calcium), yellow new growth (Iron), dark leaf veins and light leaf colour (Magnesium).
To counter these problems, one should immediately carry out a 50% water change, ensuring that you remove the dead leaf matter from the bottom of the aquarium. Once the aquarium is filled again, you can begin dosing Scape K and Trace as per the instructions on the bottle.
